The area was incorporated as the Town of East Sudbury in April 1780. It was renamed Wayland in 1835, honoring Dr, Francis Wayland who was the President of Brown University. Wayland was also a friend of Edward Mellen, the judge of East Sudbury. Both gentlemen were the benefactors of the town's library which incidentally was the first free public library in the state.
